It can be incredibly hard to leave your furry child behind when traveling.  Luckily, with more and more dog friendly hotel chains, you don’t necessarily have to!

According to a 2016 survey conducted by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, roughly 50% of U.S. hotels now permit four-legged guests.  That’s great news for pet parents!

However, with so many different hotel brands and policies that vary by location, it can still be challenging to find the best dog friendly hotel chain for you and your pup.  Luckily, we took care of the heavy-lifting for you and got the lowdown on 50 of the biggest and most well-known hotel chains to see just how dog-friendly they really are!

What Is a Dog Friendly Hotel Chain?

There are several factors that determine what a dog friendly hotel chain means.  The first and most important factor is whether being pet-friendly is a well-publicized national policy or simply a choice to be made by each individual location.  Secondly is what restrictions are placed on dogs—particularly the number allowed and the maximum size. 

Another important factor is whether there is a pet fee charged and how reasonable it is.  Finally, we factor in any extra amenities or services there are for pets and their owners!

All of these factors, based on our research, were taken into consideration when rating these dog friendly hotel chains from 1 to 3 bones.  If more information becomes available or these brands revise their policies, we’ll do our best to keep this list and our respective ratings up to date!

Aloft Pet Policy

A young, modern member of the Marriott family, Aloft is one of the most dog-friendly hotel chains. It has 100 locations worldwide all of which are dog-friendly with no additional fee!  The listed weight restriction is 40 pounds, but if you contact the hotel in advance the manager may make an exception as they did for me.  Aloft provides all four-legged guests with a dog bed, bowls, and a bag of treats to use during their stay!

Ascend Hotel Pet Policy

Best Western Pet Policy

Is Best Western Pet Friendly?

Around 1,600 of the 4,500 global Best Western locations are dog-friendly.  Specific policies vary by hotel, but there are some corporate standards for all locations.  There is a two dog maximum per room with an 80 pound size restriction per dog.  Pet fees vary by location but the maximum allowed fee is $30/day per room or a maximum weekly charge of $150 per room.  In addition, a refundable deposit may be required with the maximum allowable amount being $150 per stay.  It’s important to note that not all rooms at the pet-friendly locations allow dogs, so make sure to specify that you’re bringing your pet when making your reservations.

Candlewood Suites Pet Policy

All of Candlewood Suites’ 300+ locations are dog-friendly!  There is no specific parameters for number of dogs but there is a size restriction of 80 pounds.  There is a one-time, non-refundable pet fee of $75 if you stay 6 nights or fewer or $150 if you stay 7 or more nights.  Unlike most hotel chains, Candlewood Suites has very specific pet policies.  When making your reservation you must call the specific property in advance to add your pet to your booking.  When you arrive you may be asked to show proof of up-to-date vaccinations.  You may leave your pet unattended in your room, however if you leave the property it must be in a crate or carrier.  Finally, they have a two-strike policy when handling noise complaints before you must relocate your furry friend.
