In the year 1107, Henry I of Britain invited a community of master weavers to come and live in southwestern Wales. The weavers came and brought with them their trusty herding dogs, the Corgi. The name Corgi originally meant “dwarf dog” in Welsh.

Over time, Corgis have become a very popular dog. Queen Elizabeth II has always had at least one Corgi since 1933! In fact, she’s owned more than 30 Corgis throughout her life!

Poodle Breed History

While commonly associated with the French, the Poodle actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany over 400 years ago. In German, “pudelin” refers to the splashing in water that the dogs would do to retrieve waterfowl. The Poodle’s curly, weatherproof coat as well as its natural swimming ability and high intelligence made it an excellent retriever.

Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe. To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France. The entertainment industry then caught on to the Poodle’s showy looks, intelligence, and ease of trainability and gave them a prominent role in circus acts across the world.

While the Poodle started out as the “standard” variety, eventually the miniature and toy variations were bred. The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog. Due to the many positive personality traits and its hypoallergenic coat, Poodles are now commonly bred with a wide variety of other breeds to produce the “designer” hybrid dogs known and loved by many as “doodles.”

Corgipoo Breed History

Like the Poogle and the Rottie Poo, among others, the Corgipoo breed is a fairly new and less-common type of doodle. They were first intentionally bred in the late 1980s when the “doodle craze” started and many people crossed poodles with other breeds in an attempt to make adorable, and hopefully non-shedding, mixed breeds. Beyond that, there isn’t much else known about the Corgipoo’s origins.

How Big Do Corgipoos Get?

The Corgi is generally only bred with a Miniature Poodle and rarely a Standard Poodle to produce Corgipoo puppies. This keeps the Corgipoo dog generally small to medium in size. They generally stand between 10 and 12 inches in height. Usually they weigh between 12 to 28 pounds.

Sizes and weights vary only slightly between genders. Keep in mind, the Corgipoo is usually significantly longer than it is tall.

Most Corgipoo puppies obtain the body of the Corgi and the shaggy soft coat of the Poodle. Corgipoos do require a decent amount of grooming. They generally have a really dense coat that requires regular maintenance.

The medium to long hair of the Corgi requires daily brushing to avoid any matting from occurring. Additionally, since Corgis do shed, regular brushing can help prevent hairs from getting everywhere. Poodles also need regular coat grooming because of their curly hair.

The exact coat of the Corgi Poodle mix is different depending on the exact genetics, however, since the coat of both parents are highly likely to require significant grooming, it is probably that the Corgipoo dog will also require consistent brushing to avoid matting.

For bathing, once every 4-8 weeks is an adequate amount to bathe a Corgipoo, as they have water-resistant and dirt-repellent hair. You should also make sure to take care of their nails and ears. Their nails require regular trimming and their ears can easily build up with debris and must be cleaned regularly to avoid any complications.

Corgipoos cannot be defined as hypoallergenic. One parent, the Poodle, is hypoallergenic, but the other parent, the Corgi, is not hypoallergenic. While mixing a hypoallergenic and a non-hypoallergenic breed often increases chances of reduced shedding and the possibility of having minimal effects on allergy sufferers, there is no way that it can be guaranteed.

The positive of breeding a Poodle with other breeds is that it typically reduces shedding and minimizes allergic reactions. It is possible that a Corgipoo may shed, but it shouldn’t be as heavily as a purebred Corgi because of the Poodle that is mixed in.

Often times a health benefit of getting a mixed breed is that they have a decreased risk of developing genetically passed on traits. Although there may be some decreased risks, there are still some health concerns to be aware of.

Some of the major health concerns that affect the Poodle Corgi Mix are bloat, hip dysplasia, Addison’s disease, and Legg-Calve Perthes Disease. Some other concerns that aren’t as common include patellar luxation, cataracts, gluacoma, hypothyroidism, and Von Willebrand’s disease. Another occasional problem that pops up in Corgipoos is elbow dysplasia.

Corgipoo Dog Breed Behavioral Traits

Corgipoos are great companions that are silly and full of energy. They’re highly affectionate towards their family and don’t always respond well to being left alone for long periods of time. They may do better with families that have time to give them adequate attention.

While the Corgi Poodle Mix is usually great with kids, it’s encouraged that you monitor your children with this dog as they’re a smaller breed and could potentially be injured by rough play.

This mixed breed has the added advantage that they’re generally easier to train than a purebred Corgi. Purebred Corgis tend to be rather stubborn, but when mixed with an eager-to-please Poodle, the training process generally goes much smoother.

The Corgi Poodle mix doesn’t need as much exercise as some breeds, but these little guys are still a bundle of energy and need ways to exert that. As a mixture of a herding dog and a Poodle—two active dogs—they need regular exercise to keep them healthy and happy.
