Beagle Breed History:

While the earliest origins of the Beagle remain a mystery, the history we know of starts in 16th century England. Here, hunters frequently owned packs of hounds. They had larger hounds for tracking deer and smaller hounds for tracking rabbits. These smaller hounds are the ancestors of the modern-day Beagle.

Beagles have excellent smell and tracking abilities—right up at the top of the ranks with Blood Hounds and Basset Hounds. In England, this breed kept being refined and eventually gained popularity in the United States as well. In 1885 the AKC recognized the Beagle as an official breed.

While still used for hunting today, the Beagle is also a popular companion dog across the world. Additionally. the breed is used by the US Department of Agriculture to detect food items in traveler’s luggage.

In popular culture, US President Lyndon B. Johnson owned Beagles during his tenure in the White House. Snoopy, from the popular “Peanuts” cartoon series, is also a Beagle.

Poodle Breed History:

While commonly associated with the French, the Poodle actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany over 400 years ago. In German, “pudelin” refers to the splashing in water that the dogs would do to retrieve waterfowl. The Poodle’s curly, weatherproof coat as well as its natural swimming ability and high intelligence made it an excellent retriever.

Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe. To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France. The entertainment industry then caught on to the Poodle’s showy looks, intelligence, and ease of trainability and gave them a prominent role in circus acts across the world.

While the Poodle started out as the “standard” variety, eventually the miniature and toy variations were bred. The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog. Due to the many positive personality traits and its hypoallergenic coat, Poodles are now commonly bred with a wide variety of other breeds to produce the “designer” hybrid dogs known and loved by many as “doodles.”

Poogle Breed History:

As with many varieties of doodle, like the Aussiedoodle and the Irish Doodle, we don’t know the exact origins of the Poogle. It is estimated that this crossbreed was originally intentionally bred in the 1980s. Beyond that, we don’t have much go on as to who first established this type of doodle. It was likely bred in an attempt to pass along the distinctive looks and tracking abilities of the Beagle with the personality and non-shedding coat of the Poodle.

How Big Do Poogles Get?

Poogles are usually bred from Miniature Poodles rather than Toy Poodles or Standard Poodles. As such, they tend to be small to medium in size. The average Beagle Poodle mix weighs approximately 10-30 pounds and stands anywhere from 9-16 inches tall.

Poogle Dog Breed Coat & Grooming:

The length and texture of the Poogle coat tends to be somewhere between that of a Beagle and that of a Poodle. Longer by hound standards and shorter by Poodle standards. It can range anywhere from thin to thick and straight to slightly wavy or curly.

Coloring also varies widely, though with this breed you tend to see a lot of color mixes rather than one solid color. Brown, black, white, and cream are amongst the color possibilities.

As far as brushing is concerned, this also depends on how long or short the coat is and how curly or straight. On average, you should brush your Poogle around 2-3 times per week.

Are Poogles Hypoallergenic?
Do Poogles Shed?

In the Beagle Poodle Mix, one of the two parents sheds while the other is non-shedding and hypoallergenic. So will the Poogle puppies be hypoallergenic? The short answer is that nobody knows. No breeder can guarantee that Poogle puppies will be hypoallergenic.

For this reason, if you have severe allergies to dogs it’s best to opt for a doodle breed that is a mix of two hypoallergenic breeds like the Schnoodle, the Whoodle, or the Woodle. Keep in mind that there is a chance that a Poogle puppy may be non-shedding or hypoallergenic, it just isn’t a sure bet.

The closer to a Poodle that a Poogle is will also determine how likely they are to be hypoallergenic. For example, an F1B Poogle is more likely to be hypoallergenic than an F1 Poogle because the F1B is 75% Poodle instead of the 50% Poodle the F1 is.

The average lifespan of a Poogle is between 10 and 13 years of age.

Poogle Dog Breed Common Health Concerns:

As you would expect, the common health issues of both Poodles and Beagles are found in the Poodle Beagle Mix. Luckily, as a mixed breed, the Poogle is less susceptible to these health conditions. While this lessens their odds, it doesn’t make them immune.

A few of the more common health issues seen in Poogles are Cushing’s Disease, Bloat, Von Willebrand’s Disease, Addison’s Disease, Epilepsy, and Hip Dysplasia.

Beagle Poodle Mix Temperament & Personality

Poogle Dog Breed Behavioral Traits:

Poogles have very loving and loyal temperaments that many families adore. Just like with any breed, there are pros and cons to this Beagle Poodle mix.

On the pro side, they are very friendly with other humans and not overly protective or aggressive. They are intelligent and love to learn and show off new tricks. On the con side, they are attention seekers and may act out or be mischievous if they don’t get the attention and mental stimulation they require.

While they may be friendly with humans, their natural chasing instinct can kick in when living with other animals which can be intimidating. Overall, they are of moderate difficulty to train. While first-time dog owners may be able to handle this breed, seasoned owners will have an easier time working on some of their trouble areas.

Poogle Dog Breed Activity Requirements:

Poogles are an active breed and need sufficient physical activity to be happy. It’s recommended that they get at least 45-60 minutes of exercise each day. Not only are walks important, but taking them to dog parks or a large field to run around in is helpful to get the energy out and put their natural instinct to chase to a productive, healthy use.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to supervise the Poodle Beagle Mix closely when off-leash as their natural instinct to track and chase prey can kick in.
