Dachshund Poodle Mix Breed History

Dachshund Breed History:

Some believe that the first Dachshunds were in Ancient Egypt due to drawings that had dogs that highly resembled the present day Dachshund.  However, Dachshunds are better known for their history in Germany.  The word Dachshund means “badger dog” in German.

This small breed was originally bred to hunt badgers.  They were first bred around 600 years ago.  The long and low to the ground body of a Dachshund made them especially good at digging into badger holes and displacing its occupant.

The Dachshund is known for its loud bark despite its small body.  This was important back when they were used for hunting, because it’s master who was above ground would be able to find the dog’s location underground.  There is a large variety of Dachshund coats due to the many different types of hunting they eventually participated in.

Poodle Breed History:

While commonly associated with the French, the Poodle actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany over 400 years ago.  In German, “pudelin” refers to the splashing in water that the dogs would do to retrieve waterfowl.  The Poodle’s curly, weatherproof coat as well as its natural swimming ability and high intelligence made it an excellent retriever.

Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe.  To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France.  The entertainment industry then caught on to the Poodle’s showy looks, intelligence, and ease of trainability and gave them a prominent role in circus acts across the world.

While the Poodle started out as the “standard” variety, eventually the miniature and toy variations were bred.  The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog.  Due to the many positive personality traits and its hypoallergenic coat, Poodles are now commonly bred with a wide variety of other breeds to produce the “designer” hybrid dogs known and loved by many as “doodles.”

Doxiepoo Breed History:

The Doxiepoo dog is a relatively new breed.  Both of the parents, the Dachshund and the Poodle have been around for a long time, but they weren’t mixed together purposely until the 2000s.  This was likely due to attempting to reduce the shedding of the Dachshund by mixing it with the hypoallergenic Poodle.

Despite being newer, the Doxiepoo breed is rather rare.  Much like with other rare varieties of doodle, like the Huskydoodle and the French Boodle, it can sometimes be difficut to find a reputable Dixiepoo breeder.

Dachshund Poodle Mix Appearance & Grooming

How Big Do Doxiepoos Get?

Doxiepoos are a smaller breed, a mix between the Dachshund, and either a Toy Poodle or  Miniature Poodle.  On average, they range between 8 and 21 inches in height.  They can weigh anywhere between 5 and 30 pounds!  The size of the Dachshund Poodle mix is based on the size of their parents and can range from miniature to medium-sized dogs.

Doxiepoo Dog Breed Coat & Grooming:

Doxiepoo puppies can have different lengths of hair, generally similar to the length of the coat of the Dachshund parent.  No matter the length, the coat should be brushed daily to keep it in the best possible shape.  Usually, Doxiepoos have a medium length dense and wavy coat that can become easily matted if not well maintained.

In terms of color, they have a large variation in coat color.  Some common colors are white, cream, gray, black, or brown.

Are Doxiepoos Hypoallergenic?
Do Doxiepoos Shed?

A Doxiepoo dog cannot be guaranteed to be hypoallergenic because the one parent, the Dachshund is not hypoallergenic.  That being said, Dachshunds do not shed that much in comparison to other dog breeds, and once mixed with a hypoallergenic Poodle, the shedding is minimized even more.  If the coat more closely resembles the Poodle coat, it is likely to shed less.

If you absolutely need a hypoallergenic dog, this breed may not be the best choice for you as there is no way to guarantee if it is hypoallergenic or how much it will shed.  Consider other doodle varieties that are mixed with two hypoallergenic parents like the Bichon Poodle Mix or the Yorkie Poodle Mix.

Dachshund Poodle Mix Health & Wellness

Doxiepoo Dog Breed Lifespan:

Getting a Doxiepoo dog can be a big commitment.  On average, Doxiepoos live for around 12-15 years.  Both of the parent breeds have a similar lifespans.

Doxiepoo Dog Breed Common Health Concerns:

Mixed breeds are often considered less prone to developing health issues because the genetic diveristy can decrease the risk of passing on problems to the offspring.  This being said, like most dogs, the Poodle Dachshund Mix does have some health risks that you should be aware of.

Some of the major concerns include intervertebral disc disease, hip dysplasia, bloat, Addison’s disease, Canine Cushing’s Disease, and Legg-Calve Perthes Disease.  Some other concerns that aren’t quite as prevalent are patellar luxation, cataracts, gluacoma, Von Willebrand’s Disease, and elbow dysplasia.

Due to the cost of treating these common health concerns, we highly encourage all dog owners invest in pet insurance. We recommend getting a free online quote from Healthy Paws Pet Insurance.

Dachshund Poodle Mix Temperament & Personality

Doxiepoo Dog Breed Behavioral Traits:

This hybrid is a great companion dog.  Generally they do well with an active lifestyle.  These dogs are very intelligent, but can be rather stubborn.  This stubbornness most likely is passed on by the Dachshund parent.  Due to their high intelligence, it’s important to keep the Dachshund Poodle mix mentally stimulated to prevent them from getting bored, which may provoke some destructive behavior.

For the most part, this breed is good with children.  Because of it’s smaller size, too rambunctious of children may overwhelm the dog and cause them to become scared.  These dogs can be shy at first, but when properly socialized as puppies they will warm up to both dogs and people rather quickly.

Doxiepoo Dog Breed Activity Requirements:

Given the history of both of the parents being active working dogs, it’s a safe assumption that these dogs need a good bit of exercise.  They need a moderate amount of exercise daily—around an hour of playing fetch, a long walk, or play time with friends are all excellent options for these dogs to expel their energy.

Doxiepoos can flourish in most living situations, from apartments to houses with large yards.  At least a small yard is important for the Dachshund Poodle Mix.  Given their loyalty to their family, being alone for extended periods of time may cause some anxiety.  This breed prefers to be with its family rather than alone.  Doxiepoos can tolerate most climates, although they most likely have a small preference towards a warmer climate.
