short maltipoo haircut

Short Maltipoo haircuts are becoming increasingly popular—and for good reasons!  They’re incredibly practical and can be super cute as well.

Sadly, due to numerous bad experiences Maltipoo owners have had, getting a short Maltipoo summer cut can oftentimes be a worrisome experience.  What if they shave your pup without your consent? What if you don’t like the style?

This article was written to help ease your worrying and increase the odds you’ll be satisfied with your Maltipoo’s grooming experience! We’ll talk about the benefits of a short hairstyle for your dog, how to let your groomer know exactly what you want, and at the end we’ll show you 15 before and after photos of Maltipoos to use as examples!

Short Maltipoo Haircut Benefits

Keeps Your Dog Comfortable & Cool During Hot Weather

You wouldn’t wear a heavy coat when it’s hot outside, so why would you force your Maltipoo to do just that?

If you’re located in an area with a seasonal climate, many owners opt for a short Maltipoo haircut once or twice each year when the weather is warmer. If you’re located in an area where it’s hot the entire year, consider keeping your Maltipoo’s coat shorter all the time.

Maltipoos don’t have the same ability to sweat that humans do to keep themselves cool.  Instead, they rely on panting, drinking water, and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose.  This makes them less efficient than us at regulating their body temperature and more susceptible to overheating.  Overheating can be very dangerous and result in costly trips to the vet—just one more reason to get pet insurance!

Some innovative products like this cooling harness on Amazon can help make your Maltipoo a bit cooler in the heat, but another option to keep them cooler and safer is by giving them a short Maltipoo haircut when it gets warmer outside.

Easier Maintenance & Cleaning

Maltipoos in general are a fairly high-maintenance breed when it comes to keeping their coat healthy and looking nice.  Some generations of Maltipoos have different coat attributes and can be easier or harder to manage.  In general though, the longer your Maltipoo’s hair, the more challenging it becomes to keep it clean and free of matting.

By contrast, short Maltipoo haircuts couldn’t be easier to take care of! Bath time is accomplished in 50% of the time. Brushing becomes a breeze instead of a seemingly never-ending chore. Muddy paws are simply wiped off rather than staying a dirty, soggy mess…especially when you have this MudBuster paw cleaner on Amazon!  Oh, and you’ll never have to deal with the disgusting poop that can get stuck to long hair around your Maltipoo’s butt.

Overall, you’ll be able to spend less time tending to your Maltipoo’s coat and more time playing with them, snuggling together, or otherwise enjoying their company.

Save Money & Time on Grooming Trips

I definitely don’t need to explain to you how expensive grooming appointments for your Maltipoo can be! While prices can vary a lot, I get charged about $80 (before tip) each visit.

When you constantly keep your Maltipoo’s hair long, you’ll be stopping by the groomer pretty frequently for regular trims.  All those visits can add up quickly.  With a short Maltipoo haircut you can go longer without visiting the groomer, therefore saving a decent chunk of money over the course of a year.

The biggest tip to accomplishing this is to make sure you brush frequently between grooming appointments so you avoid your Maltipoo having matted hair. I highly recommend the Chris Christensen Baby G Brush on Amazon. It’s a tad pricey, but it’s worth every penny!

Even if you choose to groom your Maltipoo at home to save money, opting for a Maltipoo summer cut instead of keeping their hair long will save you time and hassle.

Come On, It’s Cute!

This might not be the most popular opinion, but I personally think that a nice, short haircut on a Maltipoo looks just as cute as a longer teddybear style.  A short cut can look good on any Maltipoo size.  And let’s be completely honest—even with the worst haircut imaginable our pups will always be 100% adorable!

What Are Maltipoo Summer Cuts?

A Maltipoo summer cut is simply another term for a short haircut.  While some groomers may use it to describe a particular look, I’ve found that using names or terms of specific styles is risky, as different people have different interpretations of what they mean.  It’s best to find one of the before and after Maltipoo summer cuts photos below to show to your groomer as an example of exactly what you’re looking for!

What is a Maltipoo Kennel Cut?

Similar to Maltipoo summer cuts, a Maltipoo kennel cut is often a term used to describe a generic short haircut.  Many groomers will interpret this as the same length of hair all over from head to tail while others will interpret it as a short body with longer ears and tail.  To avoid confusion, it’s best to show your groomer a photo of a Maltipoo kennel cut so you’re both on the same page as to exactly how your Maltipoo will look and how long you’d like their hair to be.

How to Request a Short Maltipoo Haircut

There are lots of terms that can be used to describe how you want your dog to look when talking to a groomer.  We already discussed “Maltipoo Summer cuts” and “Maltipoo Kennel cuts” in the previous sections.  There are plenty of others such as “lamb cut,” “puppy cut,” “teddybear cut,” etc.

From my experience, using those terms may do more harm than good in attempting to communicate how you’d like your Maltipoo to look.  As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

I always bring a photo to show my groomer how I’d like my doodle to look and I suggest you do the same.  If you have a good photo of your Maltipoo with a previous haircut you liked, use that.  If you don’t or you want a different style than normal, use one of the short Maltipoo haircut before and after photos below!

Although it goes without saying, be kind to your groomer and consider their recommendations.  Always remember that they’re the experts.  If your Maltipoo is matted and needs to be completely shaved, they’re doing it for the wellbeing of your dog, not out of laziness or spite.  What matters most is that your Maltipoo is happy and comfortable, even if they look a little silly.

Want to Do It Yourself?

If you’re looking to save money and have complete control over your dog’s appearance, you might want to try grooming your Maltipoo at home.  It may sound intimidating, but there are beginner courses online such as this one from Udemy that will walk you step-by-step through the process with video tutorials.  The instructor of this particular course is a former professional groomer and even has a doodle herself she uses as an example!

While buying a course and grooming equipment may seem like a big expense, you would essentially “break even” from the savings you’d pocket from skipping just one or two trips to the groomer!
